7:30 PM, Saturday May 17, The Vogue, $18.50

When the garage rock revival took hold in the US earlier this decade, several Scandinavian bands picked up on the trend and exported rock as raw as what their American counterparts created. Count The Hives among the best of the Nordic exports. The Swedish group’s highly energetic live show landed them on the top 10 of SPIN magazines Top 25 live acts in 2006. They currently tour behind their 2007 release, “The Black and White Album.”

Saturday May 17 (10 – 6) and Sunday May 18 (10-5), Indianapolis Art Center, $15

Along with the work of the 225 artists showing at the Broad Ripple Art Fair, you can also take in music from some of the area’s best artists. Four outdoor stages, including one featuring kids’ music, provide a soundtrack for the weekend event. Cynthia Layne, blueprintmusic, the Duke Tumatoe Duo, Michael Kelsey, and Left Lane Cruiser are among the acts scheduled to perform. Visit indplsartcenter.org for full schedule of performers and set times.

3. The Pete Best Band w/ Bigger Than Elvis

9 PM, Wednesday May 21, Radio Radio, $10

Pete Best received what may be the most famous pink slip in history. Best was the drummer for The Beatles during their years in Hamburg and Liverpool. He was fired from the group in 1962 and replaced by Ringo Starr. Over the last 20 years Best has performed with his own band, recreating the sound of those early Beatle years. Perhaps your only chance to see a former Beatle perform in a club setting comes Wednesday.

1. Tegan and Sara

7:30 PM, Thursday May 8, Egyptian Room, $23

Band mates and identical twin sisters Tegan and Sara make their first visit to Indianapolis since performing at the Midwest Music Summit in 2005. Since that appearance the popular Canadian indie rockers have released a new album, 2007’s “The Con,” and a download-only EP. The duo should find a larger audience on this visit thanks to their frequent appearances on US TV and use of their songs on the soundtracks of popular television shows.

2. DeVotchKa w/ Basia Bulat

7 PM, Saturday May 10, The Vogue, $15

A special Saturday get-in-early/get-out-early show at the Vogue brings Denver-based “gypsy punk” band DeVotchKa to town. The gypsy part of that fusion comes from the southern and eastern European sounds that influence the group’s music. The punk comes from the rock elements that power their songs. The group found their biggest audience when they were selected to compose the score for the film “Little Miss Sunshine.”

3. Joey DeFrancesco Trio

8 & 10 PM, Saturday May 10, Jazz Kitchen, $20

Hammond B-3 master and Jazz Kitchen favorite Joey DeFrancesco returns to Indy for two Saturday night shows at the Broad Ripple club. The musician learned his craft playing with his father’s bands when he was six. At seventeen he was invited to be part of Miles Davis’ band. DeFrancesco has spent most of the last two decades leading his own acts, getting credit for bringing the B3 organ back into vogue in the jazz world.

IMN OnTrack takes a closer look at one track a local artist has put on the web for your perusal, and give you a little history behind the music as well. We’re timing this look to coincide with that artist’s performance in the coming week, but our real goal is to get local music on your computer or portable media player. Think of this like the musical equivalent of a food court sample.

Devils of Belgrade are a throwback, through the dark, foreboding mists of time if you will, to an age of metal inhabited by powerful riffs, driving rhythms and just the right amount of guitar acrobatics. The band has dispensed with vocals and put the emphasis on their songs and the brutal consequences thereof. To that end, they’re releasing their new CD “Tracks of the Cloven Hoof” this Friday at the Melody Inn.

For a limited time (roughly a week), you can download the leadoff track from their new album, Swirling Frozen Doom, at their MySpace site. Make haste.

1. Drive By Truckers w/ Glossary

9 PM, Friday May 2, The Vogue, $22.50

For the past decade, Georgia’s Drive-By Truckers have made their musical mark by mining the sounds of classic rockers like Neil Young and Lynyrd Skynyrd and making them feel new again. Now eight albums deep into their career, they’ve become both a critical and fan favorite. Their latest album, “Brighter Than Creation’s Dark,” leans on a more stripped-down and country-influenced sound than their recent works.

2. Up! Scumbag CD release show w/ The Coke Dares, The Guts, Flamingo Nosebleed

10 PM, Saturday May 3, Melody Inn, $7

Indy punk rockers Up! Scumbag have been creating music with a DIY attitude ever since arriving on the scene. They celebrate the release of their latest work, “Reality TV Casualty,” with a CD release party this Saturday. The Coke Dares, The Guts, and Flamingo Nosebleed share the bill. Fans under 21 can check out an all-ages version of the show with a nearly identical lineup on Friday at the Emerson Theater.

3. Eisenhower Field Day CD release w/ Win With Willard, Hey Hey Melodica, Kory Quinn & the Comrades

9 PM, Friday May 2, The Melody Inn, $7

The best way to make sure everyone who attends your CD release show leaves with your record is to give them a copy when they arrive. That’s the strategy Indy band Eisenhower Field Day is employing at their CD release show. The $7 cover also gets you a copy of their new release, “Tyrants and Spies.” The group claims inspiration from bands ranging from Husker Du to Superchunk on their MySpace site.
