1. North Mississippi Allstars w/ Jimbo Mathus

8:30 PM, Thursday May 22, The Vogue, $17.50

The North Mississippi Allstars have made their mark by performing the southern blues that helped inspire rock & roll. Over seven albums, the group has crafted a raw, electric blues sound that still captures the essence of the Mississippi Delta. They currently tour behind their latest album, “Hernando.” Mississippi-born blues artist Jimbo Mathus, who also performs with the group Squirrel Nut Zippers, opens.

2. Fez Fest ’08 feat. The Dockers, Vinyl Shriner, & Playboy Psychonauts

10 PM, Friday May 23, Melody Inn, $5

The fez is one of the more misunderstood members of the hat family. Favored primarily by Shriners and gentlemen of the Ottoman Empire, the fez has recently become a fashion statement of choice for certain Indy bands. A trio of fez wearers unites on Friday to celebrate their fez-ness (or is it fez-itude?). Punk rockers The Dockers, longtime favorites Vinyl Shriner, and sitar lounge act The Playboy Pyschonauts will compare sounds and hats throughout the night.

3. Memorial Day Cookout feat. Gates of Slumber CD release show

4 PM, Monday May 26, Melody Inn, $8

It’s become tradition for the Melody Inn to open up on Memorial Day for their annual cookout. This year along with free food from their grill, the club serves up a menu of hard rock topped off by doom rockers Gates of Slumber’s CD release show. Their joined by Chicago’s Bible of the Devil along with Indy acts Lafcadio, Denoggonizer, and Apostle of Solitude.

4. Carb Day feat. Stone Temple Pilots

3:30 PM, Friday May 23, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, $10

Carb Day’s move from the Thursday before the 500 to the Friday prior to the race has made it one of the biggest and best pre-race parties in the city. The event has attracted big name acts in recent years to cap off the music at the track. This year the recently reformed Stone Temple Pilots do the honor of performing for the Carb Day crowd. Expect a rundown of the popular alt-rock band’s hits.

5. Robert Earl Keen w/ Matt King

9 PM, Friday May 23, Music Mill, $20

There must be something in the water in Texas that produces all the poignant and witty songwriters who call the state home. Count Robert Earl Keen among the many musical stars to come from the Lone Star State. Keen’s work walks the line between touching ballads and humorous rave-ups. Along the way he’s earned fans from the alt-country, folk and college crowds.

6. Everything Now, Quiet Hooves, Grampall Jookabox

9 PM, Friday May 23, Radio Radio, $5

“Experimental” should be the password that gets you into Radio Radio on Friday for a show featuring bands that push the boundaries of pop music. Everything, Now! has made their name locally by gathering a collective of like-minded music makers and producing a sort of community pop complete with sing-alongs. Grampall Jookabox pushes on the envelope of folk while Athens, GA’s Quiet Hooves covers a lot of musical ground with their 10-member lineup.

7. X103 May Day

2 PM, Saturday May 24, Verizon Wireless Music Center, $19.50-39.50

It’s opening weekend for Verizon Wireless Music Center. The venue kicks off its 23rd year of operation with the annual May Day concert sponsored by radio station WRZX 103.3-FM. As always, the day-long concert gathers popular modern rock bands that should be familiar to the station’s listeners. The 2008 lineup features 3 Doors Down, Seether, Finger Eleven, Theory of a Deadman, and Atreyu.

8. Here Come the Mummies w/ Soul Love Universe

9 PM, Sunday May 25, The Vogue, $15

The Vogue rarely lets a big event go by in Indianapolis without inviting club favorite Here Come the Mummies to perform. This time around they take the stage on Sunday for revelers looking to keep their race-day parties going. The group won their local fans thanks to their party-time funk sound and their odd mummy costumes. Expect no less than a packed house for the Nashville, TN band.

9. Children of Fallen Soldiers Relief Fund Benefit

8 PM, Thursday May 22, Melody Inn, $5 minimum donation

The Children of Fallen Soldiers Relief Fund was established in 2003 to provide college grants and financial aid to the children and families of soldiers who lost their lives or suffered severe disability in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. This event raises money for the fund. You can support the effort with a $5 or more donation while taking in a show featuring local acts Idle Villains, The Common, Stockwell Road, and People Vs. Radio.

10. Larry Coryell

8 & 10 PM, Friday May 23, Jazz Kitchen, $20

Guitarist Larry Coryell’s departure from the strict jazz world into rock and eastern sounds helped power the jazz fusion trends of the 60’s and 70’s. His work in fusion is considered so influential that he was dubbed “the Godfather of Fusion” by one writer. Coryell has filled his 40-year music career with nearly 60 album releases as well as performances with a who’s-who of stars from the jazz and rock world.
