IMN OnTrack: Jascha
IMN OnTrack takes a closer look at one track a local artist has put on the web for your perusal, and give you a little history behind the music as well. We’re timing this look to coincide with that artist’s performance in the coming week, but our real goal is to get local music on your computer or portable media player. Think of this like the musical equivalent of a food court sample.
Whether it’s a solo show or he’s backed by other musicians, it’s Jascha’s songwriting skills that take center stage. He maintains a busy schedule, and you’re likely to find him at a venue or festival near you in the coming weeks. Your next chance is May 1st at the Melody Inn.

INDY TOP 10 LIVE: April 24-April 30, 2008
Weekly best bets for the Indianapolis music lover. The Indy Top 10 Live is compiled by a selection panel of local print, radio, and internet journalists and is new every Thursday online and in print in Indy.com.

1. Bobby McFerrin, Chick Corea, Jack DeJohnette
8 PM, Friday April 25, Clowes Hall, $25-35
A trio of heavy hitters in the modern jazz world team up for a unique night of music. Vocalist Bobby McFerrin’s name might be the one most recognized by casual music fans thanks to his 1988 #1 single “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” He’s joined by pianist Chick Corea and drummer Jack DeJohnette, a pair of musicians who started with Miles Davis’ band before building their own reputations as composers and band leaders.
2. Matt Pond PA w/ Pete Francis & Dick Prall
9 PM, Tuesday April 29, Birdy’s, $12
The Rock For Riley concert series continues this week with a show headlined by Matt Pond PA. The event offers a chance to help Riley Hospital For Children while checking out an acclaimed and prolific indie pop band. The group’s latest album, 2007’s “Last Light,” leaned less on the strings that gave the band the “chamber pop” label and more on Brit-influenced power pop. New York singer/songwriter and Chicago-based Dick Prall handle opening duties.
3. Kathleen Edwards w/ The Last Town Chorus
8:30 PM, Wednesday April 30, Music Mill, $17
The Canadian invasion of Indy’s music calendar carries on with a visit from Kathleen Edwards. The Ottawa-born singer/songwriter claims the music of Ryan Adams and Whiskeytown as her primary inspiration. That influence comes through strong in her latest album, “Asking For Flowers,” a record that mixes alt-country and folk rock. Brooklyn’s The Last Town Chorus, a band defined by the unique sound of singer Megan Hickey’s lap steel guitar, opens.

Little Sky Giant boasts members with strong local pedigrees, including such favorite acts as the Fancy Lizards and the Whiskey Brothers. Plainly stated, these folks can play. And play they do, often for long, jammy stretches of time. Which, of course, makes this week’s show at the Mousetrap a perfect fit. Enjoy the show on April 25th, beginning at 10pm.

1. Spoon w/ Prizzy Prizzy Please
6:30 PM, Saturday April 19, The Vogue, SOLD OUT
For the second time in as many weeks, a sold out show at the Vogue tops this list. This time Spoon takes the honors. The Austin, TX-based group has won over fans with their sparse but instantly catchy pop melodies. The group cracked the top 10 of the Billboard album chart with their most recent release, 2007’s “Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga.” Bloomington’s Prizzy Prizzy Please opens the show before heading out on their own spring tour.
2. The Cool Kids w/ Twilight Sentinels, DJs Indiana Jones & Marcus
8:30 PM, Sunday April 20, The Vogue, $17
Count The Cool Kids as the latest group that got their start by distributing their music online and has since grown into a buzz act. The hip-hop duo met online and began collaborating to create music. They initially released all their tracks through their MySpace page, but have since gotten signed to a label and have their first record due in May. In between they’ve performed at most major music festivals and been a favorite of the media.
3. Circle City Ska Fest
1 PM, Saturday April 19, The Underground at Harrison Center, $10
If any ska fans in Indy have felt neglected by the live music scene, this event should make up for it. This all-day, all-ages event features 20 acts, including seven Indy-based bands. Shot Baker from Chicago, The Pinstripes from Cincinnati and We Are the Union from Ann Arbor, MI are among the headliners making the trip to play the show. You can get full details on the acts, set times, and samples from selected bands at myspace.com/indyska.

Prizzy Prizzy Please puts together strong yet jittery rock, and their active style has earned them a great deal of attention. It’s that kind of notice that earned them the opening slot to the sold-out Spoon show Saturday night at the Vogue.

1. The Black Keys w/ Jay Reatard
8 PM, Sunday April 13, The Vogue, SOLD OUT
Rock duo the Black Keys have relied on nothing more than their stripped down guitar/drums/vocals sound to grow into one of the country’s most acclaimed rock acts. To this point they’ve produced their own records, skipping studios to record in an abandoned tire factory. That system changed with their latest release, “Attack & Release.” The duo teamed up with Gnarls Barkley’s Danger Mouse and spent 11 days tracking the record in a studio.
2. Feist
7:30 PM, Friday April 11, IU Auditorium (Bloomington), $28
Canada’s indie rock invasion continues this week as Feist visits IU Auditorium in Bloomington as part of the annual Little 500 weekend. Feist had built an audience of music fans with her solo work and participation in indie rock collective Broken Social Scene. Her greatest success came last year when the video for “1234” appeared in an Apple iPod ad. That exposure launched her into the top 10 of the US singles chart.
3. Cloud Cult, The Forms, Sisters
9 PM, Saturday April 12, Radio Radio, $10
Local fans of the art/experimental pop group Cloud Cult were disappointed in January when the band had to cancel a scheduled show. The group makes up for the missed date this week as they visit with The Forms and Sisters opening. Cloud Cult is touring in support of their forthcoming album, “Feel Good Ghosts.” Along with the musical performance, Cloud Cult shows also incorporate on-stage painting and other visual and performance art into their show.
