INDY TOP 10 LIVE: Mar 27-April 2, 2008

Weekly best bets for the Indianapolis music lover. The Indy Top 10 Live is compiled by a selection panel of local print, radio, and internet journalists and is new every Thursday online and in print in INtake Weekly.

1. Stars w/ Martin Royle

8 PM, Thursday March 27, The Vogue, $20

Canada has exported some of the most acclaimed indie bands in the music world in recent years. Count Montreal-based Stars on that list. The group is label mates with other heralded Canadian acts like Broken Social Scene and Feist. Like those bands, Stars creates ambitious pop music that ranges from orchestrated performances to straight-ahead rockers. Washington DC-based indie singer/songwriter Martin Royle opens the show.

2. Paging Raymond w/ Jer Gregg

9 PM, Saturday March 29, Radio Radio, $5

It wasn’t long ago that Paging Raymond was one of the favorite local acts haunting Indy’s nightclubs and venues. The group of high school friends from Griffith, IN relocated to Indianapolis and brought with them a country-influenced rock sound that inspired comparisons to groups like Old 97’s and the Jayhawks. On hiatus since 2004, the group is getting back together for a reunion gig this week. Jer Gregg opens the show.

3. Devil To Pay, Lo-Pan, The Cocaine Wolves, State

10:30 PM, Saturday March 29, Melody Inn, $7

Punk Rock Night loads up on local acts for this week’s edition. Indy doom metal act Devil To Pay uses the occasion to introduce their new guitarist. The Cocaine Wolves claim influence from bands ranging from Thin Lizzy to Judas Priest to Def Leppard. State is a past winner of the Punk Rock Night award for Best Band. Lo-Pan makes the trip from Columbus, OH to keep the night from being completely dominated by Hoosier acts.

4. Virgil CD release party w/ Llange and Bulletwolf

9 PM, Friday March 28, Sam’s Saloon, $6

After taking a lengthy hiatus from their first trip through Indy’s music scene, Virgil reappeared last year and has been keeping up a busy schedule ever since. The group specializes in instrumental rock with a flair for the progressive and even touches of jazz. They’re using this show to celebrate the release of their new CD, “Juggernaut.” Down-tempo/psychedelic rockers Llange and take-no-prisoners hard rockers Bulletwolf share the bill.

5. Today is the Day, Lair of the Minotaur, Mouth of the Architect

8 PM, Monday March 31, Melody Inn, $12

Expect the Melody Inn to be packed for this visit by Today is the Day. The Nashville-based experimental/metal act has thrived as part of the metal underground for over 15 years. Along the way they’ve opened for big name rock acts like Motorhead, Slayer, Monster Magnet, and Queens of the Stone Age. Nowadays they’re a self-sufficient group releasing records on their own label, Supernova Records. Lair of the Minotaur and Mouth of the Architect split opening duties.

6.

7:30 PM, Wednesday April 2, Paramount Theatre (Anderson, IN), $30-50

Shelby Lynne has taken a unique path through her music career. Her first success came as a country singer. She got away from that style in 1999 with the release of her breakthrough solo record “I Am Shelby Lynne,” a record that redefined her as a soulful traditional pop singer in the mould of Dusty Springfield. Lynne’s latest album, “Just a Little Lovin’” is actually a tribute to Springfield that includes covers of eight of her songs.

7. Hypnotized Tour

7:30 PM, Sunday March 30, Conseco Fieldhouse, $30-66

Hip hop artists have known for many years that collaborations are a proven way to create hit records. The Hypnotized Tour applies the same idea to performing live. This tour features seven Southern hip hop stars and up-and-comers sharing the stage at Conseco Fieldhouse. The lineup includes Plies, Rick Ross, Dream, Pleasure P, Lil’ Boosie, Money G, and Snook. Expect a night of their hits and new tracks due to drop in 2008.

8. Surf Rock Night

9 PM, Friday March 28, Melody Inn, $6

These last, lingering winter days have many Hoosiers dreaming of warm weather and road trips to the beach. This surf rock lineup at the Melody Inn can help shake those final remnants of seasonal depression and get you thinking about warmer days. Indy’s own The Madeira, Bloomington’s Atomic Bombay, and Chicago’s The Cocktail Preachers team up to deliver the twangy guitars and rumbling beats that put you in a surfing mood.

9. Hip-Hop Meets Punk Rock showcase

6 PM, Saturday March 29, Emerson Theater, $7

While hip-hop and punk rock sounds don’t seem to match up well, the independent and do-it-yourself spirit of hip-hop and punk rock artists meshes together very nicely. This show featuring both punk rockers and rappers celebrates that spirit. The punk rock side is represented by The Peggy Sues and People vs. Radio. Hip-hop acts Deific, Grey Granite, Son of Thought, and Twilight Sentinels deliver the beats and rhymes.

10. Robin Trower

8 PM, Wednesday April 2, Music Mill, $30

Robin Trower’s first break in music came as a member of Procol Harum. He stayed with them until 1972 when he began his solo career. His greatest success as a solo artist came when he had a run of four straight gold records between 1974 and 1977. Trower, who has a guitar style often compared to Jimi Hendrix’s, has released 17 studio albums and a number of live and greatest hits records as a solo artist.
