1. Jill Scott w/ Raheem DeVaughn
No tag for this post.8 PM, Tuesday March 25, Murat Theatre, $52.99
Modern soul/R&B singer Jill Scott has moved from music into other art and entertainment fields in recent years. Along with her three studio albums, Scott has also published a book of her poetry, appeared on stage in a touring production of the musical “Rent,” and acted in a variety of television and film roles. Her primary passion remains music, though. Her latest album, “The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3,” came out September 2007.
2. Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks w/ John Vanderslice7:30 PM, Saturday March 22, The Vogue, $18
Stephen Malkmus served as the focal point of Pavement, the seminal “slacker rock” act, until that group went into indefinite hiatus in 1999. He jumped immediately into working with The Jicks, a band that serves partly as his backing act and partly as full collaborator. So far The Jicks’ musical output has shown the same variety as Pavement’s. Their latest album, “Real Emotional Trash,” is a trip through dense and noisy psychedelic rock.
3. Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band
7:30 PM, Thursday March 20, Conseco Fieldhouse, $57-91
Bruce Springsteen has nothing left to prove. With the help of his legendary backing group The E Street Band, Springsteen has created a catalog of rock anthems and built a mythology around his days on the Jersey Shore. The combo has won him acclaim from critics and love from legions of fans. Nonetheless, he continues to create music that builds on his reputation. His latest record, 2007’s “Magic,” was named #2 album of the year by Rolling Stone magazine.
4. The Dirtbombs w/ Kelley Stoltz8 PM, Friday March 21, Jakes (Bloomington, IN), $8
Detroit has a proud musical heritage that embraces the garage rock, punk, and soul that has come from the city in the last 40 years. The Dirtbombs are proud natives of Detroit who roll all those sounds into a mix that emphasizes the big beat of the music. Noted for their intense live shows, the group returns from a tour of Australia and New Zealand to kick off their next US tour in Bloomington.
5. Patti Larkin
7:30 PM, Sunday March 23, Old Centrum, $15
Patty Larkin has won fans and critical acclaim with her folk songwriting and strong guitar playing. She shows off both talents on her recent album, “Watch the Sky.” Larkin took full control of all elements of production on the album, including engineering and editing. She also pushed the boundaries of her musicianship by playing familiar instruments in unique ways and adding in hip-hop inspired loops.
6. Bottoms Up Burlesque feat. Creepin’ Charley and Atomic Bombay
9 PM, Saturday March 22, Radio Radio, $8
Since 2004, Indy’s Bottoms Up Burlesque troupe has been putting on a yearly show in the Fall. This year they add a Spring show to their calendar with this event at Radio Radio. All proceeds from the event go to y-me.org, a group that provides support to breast cancer patients. Along with Bottoms Up’s sexy skits and performances, you can also enjoy music from Creepin’ Charley and surf rock act Atomic Bombay.
7. Dyngus Day w/ Polkamotion
6 PM, Monday March 24, The Chatterbox
The traditional day after Easter Sunday, Dyngus Day, is celebrated in places like South Bend, IN and Buffalo, NY with a fervor rivaling St. Patrick’s Day. The Chatterbox has served as ground zero for Dyngus Day revelers in Indy for many years. Take in a Polish-inspired celebration including polka music by Polkamotion, polka dancers, and a menu featuring smoked kielbasa from the Chatterbox grill.
8. Carrie Newcomer w/ The Stellanovas7 PM, Saturday March 22, Eiteljorg Museum, $20
Hoosier-bred folk singer Carrie Newcomer teased her Indianapolis fans this Fall and Winter with short performances at local meeting houses while preparing for the release of her new album, “The Geography of Light.” This full blown concert is her first Indy visit following the release of that record. The Eiteljorg Museum serves as venue for this performance. The museum’s Web site recommends calling for details on how to get a free ticket to the show.
9. Ryan Ahlwardt, Chad Mills, Jenn Cristy, and Ryan Brown
8:30 PM, Thursday March 20, Birdy’s
We admit that this list often overlooks the hard-working local performers who regularly entertain at area pubs, taverns, and nightclubs. We hope to make some amends this week by spotlighting a show that features four such performers. Chad Mills, Ryan Ahlwardt, Jenn Cristy, and Ryan Brown can each fill a whole night with music on their own. It should be a special treat as they perform their A-material on a bill featuring all four.
10. Pipebomb, The Slammies, Urinal Mints, Super Secret Sideshow
10:30 PM, Saturday March 22, Melody Inn, $7
We conclude this week’s list with our most frequent visitor, Punk Rock Night. With over a decade of putting together weekly shows under their belts, it’s tough to overlook the crew that brings music to the Melody Inn every Saturday night. This week’s edition features a pair of local acts in Pipebomb and The Slammies along with one of PRN’s favorite out-of-town acts, the Urinal Mints. Super Secret Sideshow rounds out the night’s entertainment.
