INDY TOP 10 LIVE: Mar 27-April 2, 2008
Weekly best bets for the Indianapolis music lover. The Indy Top 10 Live is compiled by a selection panel of local print, radio, and internet journalists and is new every Thursday online and in print in INtake Weekly.
1. Stars w/ Martin Royle
8 PM, Thursday March 27, The Vogue, $20
Canada has exported some of the most acclaimed indie bands in the music world in recent years. Count Montreal-based Stars on that list. The group is label mates with other heralded Canadian acts like Broken Social Scene and Feist. Like those bands, Stars creates ambitious pop music that ranges from orchestrated performances to straight-ahead rockers. Washington DC-based indie singer/songwriter Martin Royle opens the show.
2. Paging Raymond w/ Jer Gregg
9 PM, Saturday March 29, Radio Radio, $5
It wasn’t long ago that Paging Raymond was one of the favorite local acts haunting Indy’s nightclubs and venues. The group of high school friends from Griffith, IN relocated to Indianapolis and brought with them a country-influenced rock sound that inspired comparisons to groups like Old 97’s and the Jayhawks. On hiatus since 2004, the group is getting back together for a reunion gig this week. Jer Gregg opens the show.
3. Devil To Pay, Lo-Pan, The Cocaine Wolves, State
10:30 PM, Saturday March 29, Melody Inn, $7
Punk Rock Night loads up on local acts for this week’s edition. Indy doom metal act Devil To Pay uses the occasion to introduce their new guitarist. The Cocaine Wolves claim influence from bands ranging from Thin Lizzy to Judas Priest to Def Leppard. State is a past winner of the Punk Rock Night award for Best Band. Lo-Pan makes the trip from Columbus, OH to keep the night from being completely dominated by Hoosier acts.

IMN OnTrack: Bulletwolf

Bulletwolf
IMN OnTrack: Bulletwolf
IMN OnTrack takes a closer look at one track a local artist has put on the web for your perusal, and give you a little history behind the music as well. We’re timing this look to coincide with that artist’s performance in the coming week, but our real goal is to get local music on your computer or portable media player. Think of this like the musical equivalent of a food court sample.
With many years of experience in Indy’s heavy music scene, the members of Bulletwolf know what it takes to get the job done. It’s a formula that relies on powerful riffs, aggressive songs, and an overactive stage show. The band has also recorded a few tracks and released them as “Demolanolin.”
Tags: Bulletwolf, IMN OnTrackThree of those tracks are posted on their MySpace site, and you can catch Bulletwolf live at Sam’s Saloon March 28th for the Virgil CD release party.

Napier on The Dirtbombs - 3/21 @ Jake’s

The Dirtbombs
Ko Melina, bassist/guitarist for The Dirtbombs, is one of the few real rock goddess walking the planet right now. A quiet, serious looking Vietnamese chick with average looks, onstage she becomes larger-than-life, a monster, a sexpot of the first degree. She plays a standard Fender Mustang like a bass guitar most of the time, adding sweet, hypnotic guitar rhythms when the song calls for it. She sings, she dances, she poses, she runs the band. She is the perfect woman. She is a goddess without whom the world would be a dull, gray place indeed.
When I was able to tear my eyes away from Ko, I was able to realize that yes, I was in Jake’s, in the heart of Bloomington at an explosive set by Detroit’s finest, The Dirtbombs. And much as I was smitten with Ko, she was just a part of a fiery rock combo. On the left side of the stage was a hulking curly-headed Bonham-like hammer-of-Thor drummer trying his best to beat the fuck out of the drumkit. On the right, a powerfully Moonish curly-headed, seven-arms-of-Shiva drummer doing his best to shake every ass in the place. I barely noticed the other bass player. He must have been good, but he wasn’t no Ko.
Soul Brother #1 Mick Collins held it all together in the middle. He is a little bit Hendrix, a bit Otis Redding, and some Stevie Wonder with hints of Sly Stone. And I’m just talking about his voice. His distinctive lo-fi guitar freak-out show is highly entertaining and a little alarming at the same time. He even managed to take the INXS track “Need You Tonight” and turn it into a sweaty Detroit rock anthem.
The climax came at the end of the third encore, a bottom-heavy funk rave-up dedicated to the Indiana state trooper who had pulled them over earlier in the day. The curly-headed hammer-of-Thor drummer had his floor tom on his head and Ko was beating on it full-force. He came out of it in a raging psychotic freak-out, flailing away before tackling a nearby photographer, dry-humping him and running off the stage. Meanwhile, Ko and that other bass player dude switched up instruments and Ko slapped out some crazy funk, before raising her arm in a triumphant rock goddess pose.
If only all rock shows could be this good.

1. Jill Scott w/ Raheem DeVaughn
8 PM, Tuesday March 25, Murat Theatre, $52.99
Modern soul/R&B singer Jill Scott has moved from music into other art and entertainment fields in recent years. Along with her three studio albums, Scott has also published a book of her poetry, appeared on stage in a touring production of the musical “Rent,” and acted in a variety of television and film roles. Her primary passion remains music, though. Her latest album, “The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3,” came out September 2007.
2. Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks w/ John Vanderslice7:30 PM, Saturday March 22, The Vogue, $18
Stephen Malkmus served as the focal point of Pavement, the seminal “slacker rock” act, until that group went into indefinite hiatus in 1999. He jumped immediately into working with The Jicks, a band that serves partly as his backing act and partly as full collaborator. So far The Jicks’ musical output has shown the same variety as Pavement’s. Their latest album, “Real Emotional Trash,” is a trip through dense and noisy psychedelic rock.
3. Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band
7:30 PM, Thursday March 20, Conseco Fieldhouse, $57-91
Bruce Springsteen has nothing left to prove. With the help of his legendary backing group The E Street Band, Springsteen has created a catalog of rock anthems and built a mythology around his days on the Jersey Shore. The combo has won him acclaim from critics and love from legions of fans. Nonetheless, he continues to create music that builds on his reputation. His latest record, 2007’s “Magic,” was named #2 album of the year by Rolling Stone magazine.

EPISODE 134: The Indianapolismusic.net Podcast
This podcast is sponsored by Mike Tressler. As are the next few, probably. He doesn’t get to pick the tracks, though. The voters still do that, and this week they’ve thrust Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks, Patty Larkin, Raheem DeVaughn, Jenn Cristy, Kelly Stoltz, The Stellanovas, Creepin’ Charley and the Boneyard Orchestra, and We Are Hex. The coffee mug is on the way.

We Are Hex may share some similarities with ari.ari, the group from which this trio spawned. We Are Hex, however, creates a leaner, more driven sound that still maintains the delicate balance between noisy elements and catchy indie pop. The band is currently putting the finishing touches on their new album.

1. Gladys Knight
8 PM, Saturday March 15, Hilbert Circle Theatre, $52-72
Gladys Knight trades in her usual backup group “The Pips” for the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra for this Saturday appearance at Hilbert Circle Theatre. Knight is one of the most acclaimed soul/R&B singers of her generation with over 30 hits, multiple Grammy awards, and membership in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on her resume. This show features the singer performing her hits and paying tribute to great female jazz vocalists.
2. X w/ Skybombers
8 PM, Tuesday March 18, The Vogue, $22
Bands from England and New York City helped launch punk rock in the late 1970’s. X was among the first wave of California bands to make their mark on punk in the 80’s. The group’s male/female vocal attack and rockabilly influence helped them add their own touches to the fledgling music style. The group celebrates their 31st year in business with a tour featuring the original lineup. Aussie garage rockers Skybombers open.
3. N.E.R.D. w/ Chester French
8 PM, Monday March 17, The Vogue, $25
If you’re making plans for St. Patrick’s Day, add this big show to your short list of things to do. N.E.R.D. is the collaboration of hip-hop super producers Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo of The Neptunes with Shay Haley. The result is a funky, dance-oriented sound influenced by R&B, hip-hop, and electronic music. This tour promotes the June release of their third album, “Seeing Sounds,” and warms them up for their opening slot on Kanye West’s tour later this spring.

Oh, sure. There’s a little fanboy-ism in this podcast. Once you see the folks on the list, though, you’ll totally understand. Really. Tracks from Mike Doughty, Tokyo Police Club, Alex Winston, Mike Milligan and Steam Shovel, Andy McKee, Kramus, and Henry French and the Shameless. Told you.
