1. WITT Community Radio Bash
8 PM, Friday February 29, Radio Radio, $7
Final FCC approvals recently came for WITT 91.9 FM, a new community radio station for Indianapolis. The station is now organizing for a launch and is celebrating with a bash featuring a collection of local acts. Kate Lamont & Blueprintmusic, The Philosophy, Blackberry Jam, Sarah Grain, and Mudkids share the bill. Once operating, the station promises to be home to an expansive range of music choices, including locally based artists.
2. They Might Be Giants
9 PM, Thursday February 28, The Bluebird, $18
They Might Be Giants’ upbeat and clever music always had a “children’s music for adults” feel to it. So it’s no surprise that the duo released an actual children’s album, “Here Come the ABCs,” in 2005. They followed it up earlier this month with a CD/DVD set called “Here Come the 123s.” This show at the Bluebird nightclub in Bloomington should be strictly for grown-ups.
3. 4th Annual Cash Bash
9 PM, Saturday March 1, Radio Radio, $12
Four years after his death, the spirit of Johnny Cash still looms over music. It’s tough to find a country singer or rock band who won’t point to Cash as an influence. Local rockabilly group Mandy Marie & the Cool Hand Lukes host the 4th annual Cash Bash to celebrate his legacy. Bill Kirchen, former guitarist for Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, shares the bill along with Bigger Than Elvis.

IMN OnTrack: Original State of Mind

Original State of Mind
IMN OnTrack: Original State of Mind
IMN OnTrack takes a closer look at one track a local artist has put on the web for your perusal, and give you a little history behind the music as well. We’re timing this look to coincide with that artist’s performance in the coming week, but our real goal is to get local music on your computer or portable media player. Think of this like the musical equivalent of a food court sample.
Original State of Mind began eight years ago as bands often do - two guys and a couple of acoustic guitars. Armed with those elements and a strong sense of groove, the band added members and a bunch of shows along the way. Original State of Mind remains popular with those seeking to dance to whatever stylistic elements the band decides to throw in. As long as it moves.
Tags: IMN OnTrack, Original State of MindYou can sample Original State of Mind for yourself at their MySpace site, and you can catch them live on a rare Leap Year show (only happens once every four years!) Friday, February 29th at Birdy’s.

1. Everthus The Deadbeats CD Release Show
8 PM, Saturday February 23, Spin Nightclub, $8
Everthus the Deadbeats’ ambitious and arty pop music has made them one of the area’s favorite indie rock bands. They celebrate the release of their newest record, the story and character driven “John Kill and the Microscopic Lullaby,” with a Friday night show at Spin Nightclub. An all-star lineup of local indie favorites including Early Day Miners, Arrah and the Ferns, Mason Proper, and Everything, Now! rounds out the bill.
2. Beta Male & Hey Hey Melodica
9 PM, Friday February 22, Radio Radio, Free
NUVO Newsweekly celebrates their 18th year in publication with a “Barely Legal Bash” at Radio Radio. This free event pairs up a couple of the city’s top buzz acts. Beta Male adds a touch of the theatric to their new wave inspired dance pop, including hula hoop routines revolving around the group’s drummer/front man. Hey Hey Melodica continues to impress local audiences with a sound compared by critics to XTC and Modest Mouse.
3. Galactic feat. Chali 2na of Jurassic 5 w/ Ohmega Watts
9 PM, Saturday February 23, Music Mill, $22
Galactic’s roots are set in the tradition of the funky, jazzy sounds of their native New Orleans. The group has also grown to embrace many other styles of music. Their most recent record, 2007’s “From the Corner to the Block,” brought in over a dozen MCs from top alternative hip-hop acts. Two of those rappers, Jurassic 5’s Chali 2na and Ohmega Watts, are part of this performance.

IMN OnTrack: Maravich

We’re timing this look to coincide with that artist’s performance in the coming week, but our real goal is to get local music on your computer or portable media player. The members of Maravich have done their time in all manner of loud local (and beyond local) bands, so their aggressive, sometimes abrasive sound shouldn’t come as a surprise. The trio melds this sound around some hardcore influences and a few strong melodic elements to come up with their current musical incarnation. Fans of all things brash and heavy won’t be disappointed.

Acoustic Flyer made a name for themselves playing their folk- and jam-inspired music in clubs and bars all over town. Sadly, they’re putting together their last show this Friday at Spin Nightclub in Broad Ripple, so this is your last chance to catch them and hear why so many others made the trip before.

Indy Best Bets Live: Feb 7-13, 2008

Flogging Molly
INDY TOP 10 LIVE: Feb 7-13, 2008
Weekly best bets for the Indianapolis music lover. The Indy Top 10 Live is compiled by a selection panel of local print, radio, and internet journalists and is new every Thursday online and in print in INtake Weekly.
Text by Steve Hayes
1. Flogging Molly, Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band, Dusty Rhodes & The River Band
8 PM, Sunday February 10, The Vogue, Sold Out
Flogging Molly has made a name for itself by creating a Celtic-inspired punk sound that’s influenced by bands like The Pogues and The Clash. The act that’s most responsible for this show being a sold out event, though, is Indy’s own Rev. Peyton’s Big Damn Band. The roots blues trio is touring with Flogging Molly on over 30 dates through St. Patrick’s Day. Dusty Rhodes & The River Band round out the three act bill.
2. Trem Fu CD release with The Coke Dares and Acid Green10:30 PM, Saturday February 9, The Melody Inn, $7
Expect no less than a packed house this week for Saturday’s weekly Punk Rock Night extravaganza. The band we can only call Trem Fu in family friendly publications visits from Bloomington to celebrate the release of their latest CD, “More Blood in the Monitors.” A pair of Punk Rock Night favorites makes this a can’t-miss show – the attention-deficit rock of The Coke Dares and recently reunited Indy hard rockers Acid Green.
3. The Temptations8 PM, Friday February 8, Clowes Hall, 8 PM, $21-37
The Temptations were one of the defining groups of the 60’s. Now 40 years into their history, the group has had a lot of member turnover. Twenty-six singers have been members of The Temptations over the years. This lineup features original Temptation Otis Williams. The rest of the members’ time in the Temps ranges from 25 years to less than a year on the job. The current lineup recorded their 2007 album, “Back To Front.”
