In this inaugural episode, we chatted with J. Brookinz. A talented producer who has worked with a diverse range of Indy rappers, Brookinz has lately garnered national attention by winning a Boot Camp Clik remix competition, and releasing the Jay-Z remix album “American Gangster: 80’s Style”.
Hot Fiyah: What was the first hip-hop album you owned?

IMN OnTrack: Llange

Llange
IMN OnTrack: Llange
IMN OnTrack takes a closer look at one track a local artist has put on the web for your perusal, and give you a little history behind the music as well. We’re timing this look to coincide with that artist’s performance in the coming week, but our real goal is to get local music on your computer or portable media player. Think of this like the musical equivalent of a food court sample.
The term “psychedelic” may conjure images of paisley print and flower children. Llange sticks more to the weird and trippy definition, with extended songs and expansive soundscapes. This Indianapolis band has found its way in front of many different audiences due to their ability to blend in with several genres of music. Stick back and enjoy the trip.

IMN OnTrack: The Abner Trio

The Abner Trio, like many of the Joyful Noise Recordings labelmates, aren’t noted for their mainstream albums. The band may have indie-pop leanings, but they hammer it with sharp and angular changes that skew normal song structure and sonic signatures. For attentive listeners, though, these surprises come as unexpected rewards..
Tags: IMN OnTrack, The Abner TrioThe Abner Trio and their label were kind enough to offer the track “The Spotlight” as a free download. You can also catch the band January 24th at Birdy’s.

We’re timing this look to coincide with that artist’s performance in the coming week, but our real goal is to get local music on your computer or portable media player. The Punkin Holller Boys are celebrating their tenth year telling stories and playing folk songs about life back in the place from which they take their name. Their regular third-Friday-of-the-month show may have changed locations in that time, but the band’s songwriting and performing talent (and their sizable following) has remained constant. Sure, they play a lot of other places as well, but it’s always good to visit at their home gig as well. Check them out this Friday at the Melody Inn’s early show..
Tags: IMN OnTrack, Punkin Holler BoysThe Punkin Holler Boys recently released a new CD called Zombie, and they were kind enough to post a few tracks on their MySpace site. IMN recommends “Carpenter Song.”
