IMN OnTrack: People Vs. Radio

IMN ONTRACK: PEOPLE VS RADIO
Story by Ryan Williams -
Tags: Birdy's, People Vs. RadioWednesday, November 7th at Birdy’s
IMN OnTrack takes a closer look at one track a local artist has put on the web for your perusal, and give you a little history behind the music as well. We’re timing this look to coincide with that artist’s performance in the coming week, but our real goal is to get local music on your computer or portable media player. Think of this like the musical equivalent of a food court sample.
People Vs. Radio is a little hard to pin down. There are driving rhythms that point to punk and new wave, but other elements creep in to lead you in different directions. There’s enough veteran presence in the band to keep you guessing as to what comes next. It’s probably best to let you listen for yourself, and that’s why we’re here. Check out “Remember Me” from their MySpace site - if that doesn’t hit you, there are three other tracks for download you can try.
Your next chance to see People Vs. Radio live is Wednesday, November 7th at Birdy’s, as part of a benefit for Gina411.org.

INDY TOP 10 LIVE: OCT 25-31
Weekly best bets for the Indianapolis music lover. The Indy Top 10 Live is compiled by a selection panel of local print, radio, and internet journalists and is new every Thursday online and in print in INtake Weekly.Text by Steve Hayes
1. Punk Rock Night Halloween Rip-Off
10 PM, Saturday October 27, Melody Inn, $7Halloween gives revelers the chance to masquerade as their favorite characters and celebrities. Indy’s musicians even get in on the fun as they dress up as and perform the songs of their music idols in the annual musical masquerades that fill the calendar. The yearly Punk Rock Night Rip-Off is among the longest-running of these events as groups bring punk rock legends to life. This year’s event includes bands portraying Black Flag, Rancid, Subhumans, and Turbonegro.
2. OK Go
8 PM, Friday October 26, Clowes Hall, $15-20MTV once helped many bands break into the big time on the strength of a good music video. Now that MTV has strayed from showing videos, the days of the video star seem to be behind us. OK Go reversed that trend in 2005 with their DIY video for “A Million Ways.” The low-budget, intricately choreographed clip quickly won them a fan following. They followed it up in 2006 with a Grammy winning video for “Here It Goes.”
3. Here Come the Mummies w/ Autovaughn

9 PM, Friday October 26, The Vogue, $15
Here Come the Mummies’ Halloween trip to Indianapolis is quickly becoming a tradition. While the group has no problems filling clubs any time of the year, their shtick of playing party funk while wearing mummy costumes is ideal for the Halloween season. The Vogue might be filled to capacity with mummies as the club is holding a costume contest for best dressed mummy for the event. Autovaughn opens.

Let’s get the name out of the way first - it may be spelled Pvrenchymv, but this jumbled mass of consonants is pronounced pa-reng’-ka-ma, defined on their website as “To pour into.” We Googled it, and the only references we found were to the band, so take it as you wish. It does mean the Greencastle band has been doing a great job of getting said name out and purveying their particular band of art-metal to the masses. Check out the cuts on their MySpace site for more info.
Their next performance is Sunday, October 28th at the Melody Inn. Show up at 8pm for the music, or arrive around 5:30 for a talk and book signing by drummer and Invisible Records owner Martin Adkins (NIN, Ministry, PiL, Pigface).

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW: Ween
Tags: WeenEXCLUSIVE REVIEW: Ween
Story by Brian McKenna -October 16 @ Bluebird (Bloomington)
The last time Ween was scheduled to play in Indiana was in 2004 at The Bluebird in Bloomington. Personal issues along with a drug and alcohol rehab stint for Papa Gene Ween caused the 2004 Bluebird show to be cancelled. The Bloomington show was not the only date cancelled in 2004. With the exception of a handful of festival shows, the entire tour to support Ween’s 2003 Sanctuary release Quebec was scrapped. For a band that built their once underground cult following quite literally one fan at a time, it comes as no surprise they would honor the makeup club show instead of opting for a bigger theater show.
What is a bit of a surprise is that the band originating from New Hope, PA decided to open their 27 date (and growing) North American Tour with a small club date in good ol’ Bloomington, IN. The band hit the stage promptly at 9:00 pm and the fans went crazy. Waves, bows and smiles of gratitude and appreciation from the humble bandmates fell on and warmed the crowd like sunshine on the beaches of Rio. From the first notes of the campy mariachi lounge tinged instrumental opener “Fiesta,” it was obvious this would not be a Ween show from the 90’s that consisted of mistakes, silliness, thin sound and lots of talk about poop and drugs. Instead, the band (consisting of drummer Claude Coleman, Glen McClelland on keyboards, bassist Dave Dreiwitz, and Gene and Dean Ween) sounded well rehearsed in all facets of the band’s 20+ year discography and were welcoming everyone to their party.

Local Musician Expands His Stage (Ninja) Presence

Local Musician Expands His Stage (Ninja) Presence
Story by Ryan Williams - Photos by Submitted Photo -When most musicians think about getting their signature gear into music stores around the world, it’s usually in the form of their preferred instrument. Local guitarist Brent Eskew has found another route into those stores, and he did it by trying to make the lives of musicians easier. Stage Ninja started out as an idea and some prototypes. Eskew says the company has matured since then into a professional equipment company that services a select community. The company produces items like retractable guitar and mic cords and electrical power cords with plug-ins every few feet. The whole idea is to make lives easier during set-up and tear-down.
And it’s catching on. Eskew says “We are global, baby,” referring to the placement of Stage Ninja products around the world. The products are already in 11 Sam Ash stores around the nation, and he’s secured distribution in Japan, South America, Germany, Norway, Canada, and Bermuda. “It’s a universal application.”That, of course, means that there’s a lot of travel involved. Of the five main employees at Stage Ninja, “One of us is on the road every week.”
That road work includes training in-house salespersons at places like Musicians’ Friend and Guitar Center on how to use and sell the products, as well as working with high-profile musicians to get the gear in their studios. Eskew says they’ve got Stage Ninja products into several professional studios and touring rigs. And the work never stops coming. Eskew says “There’s always something going on.” He adds that the company is “always working on advertising,” and that Stage Ninja is adding a new product to push at the Winter NAMM session in January of 2008. Still, he can’t imagine doing anything else right now.
“This is the greatest job in the world. I can’t wait to get there in the morning, and I have to pull away in the evening.”

Comparisons to Ben Folds or Keane may be fair, but Wolfy is intent on setting up their own musical sound and bringing it to as many people as possible. They’ve opened up for acts like the Goo Goo Dolls in the past year, and they’re now ensconced in the recording studio finishing up their new album.
For a sample of Wolfy, check out their MySpace site, where you can download “Skip Thursday” or a live track from the band.

Eisenhower Field Day’s immense sound belies the fact that there’s only three people in the band. They’re been featured on everything from Kinks tribute albums to BMX videos, with a sound that hearkens back to louder, fuzzier rock times.
They have an EP and a full-length album available in local CD shops and iTunes right now, and you can sample “The Backs Of My Arms” from the above link. You can also catch the band live during this Saturday’s Broad Ripple Fall Music Festival at 6pm on the Alley Cat’s outdoor stage.
