Story by Ryan Williams -September 29th @ The Melody Inn

IMN OnTrack takes a closer look at one track a local artist has put on the web for your perusal, and give you a little history behind the music as well. We’re timing this look to coincide with that artist’s performance in the coming week, but our real goal is to get local music on your computer or portable media player. Think of this like the musical equivalent of a food court sample.
Phyllis is a rough-and-tumble mix of noise, pop and rock that somehow forms a cohesive whole. The band and its members have been on the scene for many years, although this collaboration has only managed one release, their 2003 self-titled album. What they do feature on a regular basis is their September cookout show, usually timed to coincide with the Midwest Music Summit. No summit this year? No problem. Drop on by the Mel around 1pm anyway.
Phyllis’ entire album is available for download from Musical Family Tree. We recommend the track “Disappointing You.”

Beta Male may have started out as a side project for Extra Blue Kind frontman P. David Hazel, but the band has solidified after a series of personnel changes and taken on a life of its own. Handy and his cohorts have added a healthy dose of New Wave sensibilities and . . . well, sex to their already-strong songwriting and performing skills. As proof, we offer tracks from both MySpace and Musical Family Tree - check the links. Beta Male will also perform live as part of Masterpiece in a Day in the Fountain Square neighborhood this Saturday.

EXCLUSIVE REVIEW: Helmet
EXCLUSIVE REVIEW: Helmet
Story by Tommy Miller - Photos by Tommy Miller -
Aug. 30th @ The VogueSometimes you go into a show with little or no expectations. And then are times that you are completely obsessed with a show, playing little scenarios over in your head about what songs the band might play, and how the reaction of the crowd will be to your favorite group. For me, I was in the latter frame of mind. I’ve been a fan of Helmet since 1993 when my best friend introduced me to them. Since that time, I’ve been something of a super fan, collecting all of the Helmet bootlegs, singles, soundtracks that they appear on, and any solo record that Page Hamilton has contributed to. With all of that said, I headed out to the Vogue with my aforementioned best friend on Thursday night, looking forward to having a great time while absorbing some fantastic music.

How can something so wrong feel so right? Lines of Nazca submit for your approval rock and power pop with a slightly disturbing twist. Oh sure, you’ll nod your head and enjoy the superb songwriting and gleeful delivery, but something still seems a little . . . twisted. Is it the prolonged effects of the Kokomo Hum? One can only speculate.
As proof, we offer you “Over,” possibly the most poppy song about stalking we at IMN have ever heard. If this isn’t your fancy, go ahead and try some other songs. Lines of Nazca has five albums worth of mp3 files up on their website for the taking.

Dwight Edwards draws on Chicago’s electric blues style for his music, but his music doesn’t stop near Lake Michigan. Edwards has been known to play music owing as much to Detroit’s Motown sound and Memphis soul, and he combines it all with a charismatic live show.
Check out “So Many Tears” from the above link, and witness the spectacle at the Slippery Noodle this weekend.

King Deuce doesn’t try to match the overwhelming ferocity of local hardcore legends Majhas, nor does it reach for the sassy aggression of punk favorites Dirty Little Secrets. So, while they share members from those bands, they blaze their own path of blues-influenced hard rock with elements of those other groups thrown in.
Take a listen to “Shot After Shot” from their website, and catch their show at Punk Rock Night on Saturday, September 1st.
