Story by Ryan Williams -July 20th @ The Melody Inn

IMN OnTrack takes a closer look at one track a local artist has put on the web for your perusal, and give you a little history behind the music as well. We’re timing this look to coincide with that artist’s performance in the coming week, but our real goal is to get local music on your computer or portable media player. Think of this like the musical equivalent of a food court sample.
The new boss is the same as the old boss this Friday at the Melody Inn. The show may signal the end of BIGBIGcar, but frontman David Adamson also premieres the CD from his new project, Grampall Jookabox. He and collaborator Aimee Brown have dubbed their music “jungle folk,” replete with elements of electronic music and Americana melted down and molded into the same sonic candle. For an appetizer, try “Ponta,” taken from the Joyful Noise Recordings webpage. You’ll get a complementary copy of the album “Scientific Cricket” if you attend the party, as well. Also playing are Everthus The Deadbeats and Ellul.

Mercykill has taken their brand of death metal around the country once or twice, and their debut EP “Throw The Switch” is available in record stores and on iTunes. They’ve got a busy summer planned as well, culminating in September 22nd’s Indianapolis Metalfest. You don’t have to wait that long to see them, though. Their next performance is July 14th at the Emerson Theater.
For a sample of Mercykill, drop by their MySpace page and check out four full songs, including “Beyond The Mirror.”

When your resume includes stints with Ray Charles, Tony Bennett, The Count Basie Orchestra, Slide Hampton, and more, it’s obvious you’re doing something right. Rob Dixon and Triology continue that right-think path by taking some of the best musicians in Indianapolis and making some superb jazz. It’s a little smaller and more intimate than the big band, but Dixon and his bandmates carry it all well.
They’re a regular feature at the Jazz Kitchen, and you can download the track “A Better Way” right now. Enjoy. -
