IMN OnTrack takes a closer look at one track a local artist has put on the web for your perusal, and give you a little history behind the music as well. We’re timing this look to coincide with that artist’s performance in the coming week, but our real goal is to get local music on your computer or portable media player. Think of this like the musical equivalent of a food court sample.
ESW features a rotating cast of talented musicians surrounding the impressive talents of Joshua Silbert (sax and keys) and Adam White (drums and loops). Their sound melds traditional instrumentation with futuristic loops and samples. It’s be easy to compare them to groove-oriented trios like Medeski Martin and Wood, but ESW brings a forward-think bent to their music that sets them apart.
For proof, they present tracks like “Either Orgy.” You can also check out their website, which features live tracks recording with a host of local luminaries.

mewithoutYou and more!
Story by Sean Smith - Photos by Joel Faurote -June 27th @ The Irving TheaterThe Irving Theatre was treated June 27th to the final show of mewithoutYou’s first headlining tour since the release of their third album, “Brother, Sister.” The show was bolstered by supporting acts: Piebald, Manchester Orchestra and The Snake The Cross The Crown.
Rickie Mazzotta, drummer for mewithoutYou welcomed The Snake The Cross The Crown to the stage and they opened the show with ‘Cakewalk,’ the same way they kick off their new album, “Cotton Teeth.” “I wanna live on a stage / I wanna play the guitar / And I wanna get paid,” sang Kevin Jones, in a style reminiscent of Will Sheff. The band more than held their own and ended their set with a cover of The Band’s “The Weight” that saw them joined on stage by Aaron and Michael Weiss of mewithoutYou, Travis Shettel of Piebald and Andy Hull of Manchester Orchestra as they all took turns taking lead on the verses. Not surprisingly, Aaron really sank his teeth into the third verse and it seemed natural to hear him sing about waiting on the Judgment Day.

Hull kicked of Manchester’s set with a solo performance of the unreleased gem, “How I Waited,” which echoed the best moments of Damien Jurado and David Bazan’s catalog. Then the band kicked in and after playing “Wolves at Night” and “I Can Barely Breathe,” you got the sense that if Radiohead ever decides to pick up a guitar again, they are going to have some catching up to do. The excellent “Where Have You Been?” and “Golden Ticket” both helped to prove why this is a band completely capable of stealing any show. Read more

Their music is quirky, oft-times distorted, and never easily defined. Their shows can be loud and unpredictable. But you’re probably still looking at their fezzes. The Dockers have made quite a few appearances on local punk shows, but this Friday they open for the legendary Blowfly. Biggest career move to this point? Nope, that’s still the wearing of the fezzes.
Check out “Pitiful Rookerfull” and “Pussy Hat” from the band’s MySpace page. And gird your loins properly.

Multi-instrumentalist John Orr records and performs under the name The Last Domino. While his albums contain a full complement of instruments to develop his somber tales, dashed with a hint of dark humor, it’s just him and his guitar live. No matter what the sound is, though, the songs come through with a heavy heart and quick wit.
Orr celebrates the release of his new album “seconds” at Locals Only on June 16th. For a taste of what’s coming up, check out his song “Last Call (Or, How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bottle).”

Xero Sum’s modern rock sound has landed them some high-profile shows, a victory in a recent local battle of the bands worth $10,000, and a lot of attention. Still, given the three years the band has been together, you’d think a recording would be a good move as well. Xero Sum understands this concept, and they’re releasing their debut CD “This Concrete Heart” this very week.
Check out a track from said new album, “Apology.” It’s available as a free download from their MySpace site THIS WEEK ONLY, as part of the IMN OnTrack series. Thanks to them for making the download possible, and thanks to you for making some room on your hard drive of choice for some great local music.
