IMN OnTrack: Living Proof

IMN OnTrack: Living Proof
Story by Ryan Williams

May 25th @ Jackson St. (Downtown)

Listen: http://www.myspace.com/livingproofband

IMN OnTrack takes a closer look at one track a local artist has put on the web for your perusal, and give you a little history behind the music as well. We’re timing this look to coincide with that artist’s performance in the coming week, but our real goal is to get local music on your computer or portable media player. Think of this like the musical equivalent of a food court sample.

Just when you think you have Living Proof cornered as a dance-oriented cover band, out come singer/songwriter Leonard Patterson’s originals, and you’re forced to rethink your position. You don’t stop dancing, however, during this musicological conundrum. No matter what they’re playing, Living Proof will make you move. And that’s probably why you’ve seen them in club gigs and high-profile shows alike. Living Proof doesn’t just bring a party - it forces the issue on you.

The band has a full-length album and a few singles behind them (notably “The Superbowl Sway,” from earlier this year as heard on Tom Green’s Internet offerings), and they’re working on a second album at this time. In this case, we invite you to sample the song “Feel Good Music,” from those new album sessions.

IMN OnTrack: Hustler

Their influences read like the best of a classic rock radio playlist, and their music brings a little more rock glam to the stage than you usually see around here. Hustler is a new, young band mining familiar territory with good results. The four-piece is currently working on their debut album, but they’ve been showing off the songs around the Midwest for a little over a year now.

Check out a live version of “The Revolution” from their MySpace page for a hint of what they’re like. There’s also some more tracks available for download as well. You can see them live at Birdy’s this Sunday for “Cough It Up,” a benefit for breast cancer patient Jennifer Stephenson.

IMN OnTrack: Harley Poe

IMN OnTrack: Harley Poe

Saturday, May 12th @ Birdy’s and The Underground

IMN OnTrack takes a closer look at one track a local artist has put on the web for your perusal, and give you a little history behind the music as well. We’re timing this look to coincide with that artist’s performance in the coming week, but our real goal is to get local music on your computer or portable media player. You can draw comparisons between Harley Poe and the Violent Femmes, if you must. Both three-piece groups feature the same instruments (acoustic bass and guitar, with a snare drum), and they share an interest in driven pop music with more than a little punk thrown in. The music of both groups also contains some angst, anxiety, and a wicked sense of humor. The Violent Femmes are more likely to draw their material from relationships gone wrong, however, and Harley Poe is more concerned with escaping the torture of vampire lovers and the never-relenting crush of zombies. This, my friends, is an important stylistic difference.

Harley Poe rose from the grave of cult favorites Calibretto a few years ago, and since then the group has released a string of albums filled with the nightmares that populate cult horror movies loved and feared the world over. Their latest release is a split album with The Dead Vampires titled, appropriately enough, “Harley Poe and the Dead Vampires.” This selection, however, is taken from an earlier album called “In The Dark.” It’s called “Transvestites Can Be Cannibals Too.” You’re welcome.

You can also see them live this Saturday at the all-ages Punk Rock Night Prom at the Underground (zombies are for the children, after all) as well as the Best of Barfly show later that evening at Birdy’s.
