1. Tonic Ball VIII

7 PM, Friday November 20, Radio Radio & Fountain Square Theatre, $20

The annual Tonic Ball, a fundraiser for Second Helpings, turns the Friday before Thanksgiving into one of the biggest live music events in the city. This year fans can either take the Stairway to Heaven or a jaunt down Highway 61 as local artists pay tribute to Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan. The night spotlights the talents of well-known performers like Jennie DeVoe and Otis Gibbs alongside bands that form just to perform at the annual event.

2. Blind Pilot w/ Laura Veirs

8 PM, Tuesday November 24, Radio Radio, $10

The duo of Israel Nebeker and Ryan Dobrowski, better known as Blind Pilot, perform what one reviewer called “a balance between mellow folk and West Coast indie pop.” The duo recently expanded into a full band as their popularity increased. The group was busy this year thanks to opening slots on tours for Counting Crows, The Hold Steady, and The Decembrists as well as performances at the Sasquatch festival in Washington state and Lollapalooza festival in Chicago.

3. Brendan Benson

9 PM, Saturday November 21, Music Mill, $10

Brendan Benson was on his way to a productive solo career when he took a detour. Benson teamed with Jack White and members of garage rock revivalists The Greenhornes to form The Raconteurs. That group released a pair of albums and hit the road. Benson returned to his solo work this year with the release of his album, ‘My Old, Familiar Friend.’ That record found him back in the familiar territory of pop/rock inspired work.

4. Medeski, Martin & Wood

9 PM, Thursday November 19, The Vogue, $27

Medeski, Martin & Wood has captured the love of a wide range of music fans ranging from fans of jam and improvisational music to jazz fans with a taste for the avant garde. The trio has also proven themselves to be prolific in the recording studio since their formation. They’ve released 16 albums since 1992. Their most recent is the final installment of a three-album series called ‘Radiolarians.’

IMN OnTrack: The Vulgar Boatmen

IMN OnTrack takes a closer look at one track a local artist has put on the web for your perusal, and give you a little history behind the music as well. We’re timing this look to coincide with that artist’s performance in the coming week, but our real goal is to get local music on your computer or portable media player. Think of this like the musical equivalent of a food court sample.

The Vulgar Boatmen are an Indianapolis institution, creating rock that draws Bo Diddley and the Velvet Underground onto the same dance floor. Hear them reinterpret the music of Bob Dylan at Tonic Ball VIII, this Friday at the Fountain Square Theater and Radio Radio.

You can check out the Vulgar Boatmen’s MySpace page to get info on their infrequent shows, and listen to their music at their Musical Family Tree page.

1. Meat Puppets w/ Blue Moon Revue

4 PM, Sunday November 15, Radio Radio, $10

Billed as a Colts/Patriots pre-game party, this show offers a rare late afternoon start time on Sunday. The bill, however, makes it worth skipping the late NFL games on television. The Meat Puppets came to prominence in the 1980’s with a progressive punk sound that heavily influenced the grunge movement, especially Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain. After spending most of this decade in tribulation, brothers Curt and Cris Kirkwood reunited in 2006 and released a new album this year.

2. Rob Zombie

7:30 PM, Monday November 16, Murat Theatre, $24.75-45.00

Rob Zombie launched his namesake band White Zombie in 1985 and became one of the best known groove metal performers in the world. He moved from music to filmmaking. He’s spent the majority of his time writing and directing horror films in recent years. Despite his new profession, Zombie has found time to continue his solo career. His next album is due in 2010.

3. Vulgar Boatmen, Old Flames, David England

9 PM, Saturday November 14, Radio Radio, $5

The Indy music scene is filled with musicians who collaborate with many bands. Don’t be too surprised to see musicians rotating between the acts filling this bill. Vulgar Boatmen are long time contributors to Indy’s music community. Their ‘dance rock’ marries Buddy Holly pop with Velvet Underground drive. David England has performed in bands like The Benders and England Brothers. He celebrates the release of a solo CD at the show and performs with a new band, Old Flames.

4. Punk Rock Night presents Greg Brenner’s Birthday

10 PM, Saturday November 14, The Melody Inn, $7

Punk Rock Night founder Greg Brenner has put on the showcase of punk rock showcase for nearly a decade. This week the local impresario celebrates his birthday in a very un-punk fashion. Brenner handpicked a quartet of ‘guilty pleasure bands’ who don’t fit in the Punk Rock Night mould to help celebrate. The Common, Coolidge, and Red Light Driver offer power pop, classic rock, and Brit pop inspired music. Only State brings punk rock appeal to the lineup.

EPISODE 220: The Indianapolismusic.net Podcast

Ryan takes the night off ’cause he’s ready for some football, and Steve sticks with that theme with the podcast. Look for tracks from the Meat Puppets, Hank III, Dave England, Red Light Driver, Green River Ordinance, Shay, Dr. Manhattan, Grey Granite, and Rob Dixon. And, as always, screw the New England Patriots.

1. The Black Crowes

7:30 PM, Tuesday November 10, Egyptian Room, $38

The Black Crowes sordid history of music, celebrity, fame, drugs, fights, and rotating lineups led one critic to call the band “the most ‘rock & roll’ rock & roll band in the world.”  The group took a three-year break from their constant recording and touring and reemerged in 2005, picking up where they left off. Their most recent album, ‘Before the Frost…Until the Freeze,’ arrived in August.

2. Loretta Lynn

7:30 PM, Friday November 6, Emens Auditorium (Ball State University), $34.50 – $49.50

It’s always worth noting whenever a genuine music legend visits, even if it’s a short drive to see them. In this case country music legend Loretta Lynn performs at Emens Auditorium on the Ball State University campus in Muncie. Though she hasn’t released a new album since 2004’s ‘Van Lear Rose,’ Lynn’s catalog of 57 singles that hit the country chart should provide for more than enough material to please old and new fans alike.

3. La Vida Variety

9 PM, Friday November 6, Radio Radio, $8

La Vida Variety debuted with a splash this summer, offering up a live variety show featuring magic, comedy, burlesque, and music. This week offers the second installment of the series. John Orr of the band The Last Domino serves as organizer and ringmaster for the event. He performs along with horror folk band Harley Poe, sideshow acts from members of Blue Monkey Sideshow, a barbershop quartet, and belly dancers.

4. Both Sides of the Beat/Dead Zone Boys art show

6 PM, Friday November 6, Big Car Gallery

Big Car Gallery offers visual and musical artists a space to showcase their work side-by-side. This week the Fountain Square gallery offers a unique music/art/spoken word mash-up. On the visual art side, the Gallery displays works inspired by ‘Dead Zone Boys,’ the new album from local band Jookabox. The Gallery also offers Both Sides of the Beat, a hip-hop and spoken word performance featuring Twin Monster and other artists from local hip-hop label Pattern-Hungry Records.

5. The Grates w/ Pravada

8 PM, Thursday November 5, Radio Radio, $6

Sometimes the one element missing in live music is fun. When bands enjoy themselves, audiences enjoy themselves and everyone leaves happy. ‘Fun’ seems to be the most common word used to describe Australian trio The Grates. The group puts on a colorful and energetic live show with music compared to bands like The Ramones or Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The combo has made them a popular band in their home country while attracting attention in the U.S.
